A practical hand-wash routine for silk nightwear, from checking the label to drying flat. Keep silk pyjamas and silk pants soft without damage.
Quick answer
Hand wash silk nightwear in cool water with a pH-neutral silk detergent, never wring or twist it, then roll it in a towel and dry it flat away from direct sun. If the care label allows machine washing, use a mesh bag on the delicate cycle, but hand washing is the safest way to keep silk soft for years.
What you need before you start
Gather a clean basin or sink, cool water below 30°C, a pH-neutral detergent made for silk or wool, and two white towels. Avoid ordinary laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach and enzyme cleaners, because they break down the protein fibres that give silk its smooth feel. If you are washing a structured piece such as a silk blouse, keep a hanger ready so you can shape it while it is still damp.
How to hand wash silk step by step
Fill the basin with cool water and add a small amount of silk detergent. Submerge the garment and move it gently for two to three minutes; do not rub, scrub or leave it to soak. Empty the basin and rinse in cool water until no suds remain. To remove water, lay the piece on a clean towel, roll the towel up and press down. Never wring or twist silk, because wet fibres stretch and crease easily.
Drying and reshaping silk nightwear
Dry silk flat on a clean towel or a drying rack, away from radiators and direct sunlight. If you hang a silk blouse or negligee, use a padded hanger and support the weight at the shoulders so the fabric does not pull out of shape. Turn the garment inside out while it dries to protect any lace or embroidery. Silk usually dries within a few hours, and it rarely needs ironing if you smooth it flat while damp.
Storing silk so it stays soft
Once the piece is completely dry, fold it loosely and store it in a breathable cotton bag or a drawer lined with tissue paper. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can cause yellowing. Keep silk away from direct light and from rough hooks or zips that can snag the surface. For long-term storage, refold the garment along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creases.
Your silk nightwear care routine
- Check the care label first: Read the label before you wet the fabric. Some silk pieces are hand wash only, while others allow a delicate machine cycle. If the label says dry clean only, follow it.
- Wash in cool water with silk detergent: Use a pH-neutral detergent and keep the water below 30°C. Move the garment gently for two to three minutes and avoid rubbing. Never use bleach, fabric softener or enzyme detergent.
- Rinse and remove water without wringing: Rinse in cool water until the suds are gone, then roll the piece in a towel and press down to absorb water. Wringing and twisting stretch wet silk and cause creases.
- Dry flat away from heat and sun: Lay the garment flat on a towel or drying rack. If you hang it, use a padded hanger and turn it inside out. Direct sun and radiators can fade and weaken silk fibres.
- Store folded in a breathable bag: Once fully dry, fold loosely and store in cotton or tissue paper. Keep it away from plastic and rough fastenings. Refold along different lines every few months to avoid permanent creases.
Silk pieces worth caring for
- Midnight Whisper Pants: The Midnight Whisper Pants are made entirely from stretch silk designed for freedom of movement, with a flowing wide-leg cut and lace insets at the sides. Stretch silk and lace insets need gentle handling, so hand washing and flat drying protect both the fabric and the delicate trim.
- Rules of Attraction Suspender belt: The Rules of Attraction Suspender belt is made from see-through tulle at the back with intricate French embroidery and a charm at the waist. Embroidery and a metal charm should not be soaked or wrung, so wash this piece separately by hand and dry it flat to keep the details intact.
